The former La Posada Hotel, built in 1939 by Conrad Hilton and one of Albuquerque’s landmarks, has been renovated to the tune of $30 million by local developer and friend of EDo, Gary Goodman.
If you haven’t been, please make it a regular stop for yourself, friends, and family.  It’s truly a world-class hotel that shows the best side of Albuquerque – past, present and future.  The restaurant, lobby drink service, library, mezzanine cultural directories and artwork are all first rate.
Let’s support Gary in his efforts to raise the bar in our City.  See you on December 10th.

Underpass Improvements Underway

Posted in Downtown, EDo on September 9th, 2009
UnderpassYou may have noticed the construction at the Central railroad bridge entering Downtown from EDo. We spoke to Diane Sholtis with the City of Albuquerque, who informed us that exciting improvements are underway and will be completed by Friday, September 25th. It is the City’s goal to vastly improve the pedestrian connection between Downtown and EDo. Thank you, we hope it works!
The bridge and pedestrian walks are being painted. Artistic glass is being installed between the driving lanes and the pedestrian walks, which should help reduce the noise levels for pedestrians. And new LED lighting should be much brighter than current conditions.
EDo News & Views asked about maintenance of these areas, after the improvements are complete. It is the City’s understanding that the Alvarado Transportation Center will be handling keeping things clean and maintained.  We will check in with ATC next issue.

Is an Event Center Coming to Albuquerque?

Posted in Downtown, EDo, News on January 19th, 2009

Event CenterFor several years Mayor Martin Chavez along with local civic and business leaders have been pushing for an event center and hotel complex in the Downtown area and it appears the project is gaining momentum.

The City, along with Hunt Development, the creators of ABQ Uptown, is promoting the new enterprise, to be located across the street from the Lofts at Albuquerque High.

The project plans include a 550-room, nationally branded hotel with approximately 35,000 sq. ft. of meeting space and a 12,000 seat event center. It would be constructed on the 10-acre Baptist Church property at the northwest corner of Central and Broadway. Additionally, the plan includes a restaurant, retail spaces, residential apartments and condominiums.

According to the project’s website, “… proximity to and connectivity between the Albuquerque Convention Center, the Rail Runner, the Albuquerque International Sunport, and Alvarado Station make it the ideal location.”

Since the project will require public financing, Downtown City Councilors Ike Benton and Debbie O’Malley have suggested a special “mail-in ballot” election would give Albuquerque voters the ultimate decision-making authority.

“I think we will decide all of this sometime after the holiday season,” said Councilor Benton, adding, “The cost could actually come down with competitive construction prices. Trends in the bidding, even material costs, are coming down. It’s the perfect time to be doing this. The economic analysis shows a huge boost to the city in the first three years, right when it needs it.”
